When a cleaning indicator is placed in the holder, half of the test surface is covered, thereby simulating the joint of a surgical instrument, with a water stream hitting it indirectly. The other half of the test surface is covered by the holder's mesh, thus posing a difficulty for a water stream to reach it, imitating an occluded surface.
